Halloween/Experiential Education/Austin Bruins Pictures!

Happy Halloween!
We had a fun party thrown by our room parents.
Here the class is showing off their pumpkin drawings, that they drew behind their heads.

They also enjoyed Halloween treats in our classroom,
before playing a game where they had to toss the ping pong ball into the pumpkin.
 Fun times!

 Experiential Education in the gym
Scott Hanna came to teach the students about team work and cooperation.

When we work together...we do things we never thought possible!

Internet Safety

I want you to be safe while exploring the Internet. Here are some tips and things to think about as you work and play online.

Basic Internet Safety
Review the five basic rules and ask students questions which require using the rules.
Rules:
Follow the rules your teachers and parents set.
Never trade personal photographs online without your parents’ approval.
Never give your address, phone number, school, or school address to strangers. (This means don’t post them online.)
Never agree to meet someone in person that you have met online.
Never respond to threats in email or online messages. Always share these and all your online activities with your parent or trusted adult.
Situations:
You meet a friendly, smart guy playing a game online. He wants you to meet him at the movie. You should ?
Your mother says you cannot have a facebook page, but your friend has one and you really want one. You should?
You get a pop-up window which says you can win a new iPad2 if you fill out your name, address, phone number, and age. You should???
Someone sends you a message online that makes you feel a little weird. You should???
You play an online game with friends and one of the other players says mean things about your best friend. You should???
Your older cousin asks if she can post a picture of you with a note about it on Facebook. What will you say?

Protecting Personal Information & Social Networking
Nickelodeon, Common Sense Media, and other reputable sources have put together a website called The Big Help. View and discuss the 10 Rules of the Road and then view the video located in the top right of the page. Discuss.

WEBONAUTS Game- Have students participate in centers on computers or work through the game as a class. You do not need to complete it all in one day. Just make sure to save your game so you can go right back to where you were.

Learning About the Life Cycle

Meet our caterpillars! They arrived in our classroom on about Wednesday, September 12th.

By the about Tuesday, the 18th, they had moved their way to the top of the container
and formed their chrysalis.
So we moved them to their new habitat.
By Monday, the 24th we had butterflies! They are called "Painted Ladies."
They were very active in their mesh home, so we figured it was time to set them free.

Today, Thursday, the 27th, after watching their 2+ week life cycle,
we let our butterflies fly freely outside!

It was sad to see them go, but what a fun way to learn about the life cycle!

Welcome!!

Welcome to another school year! We have just finished our first week. I am so anxious to dive into learning with my class this year. I've already discovered that they are excited about reading. This is such a great foundation to begin with and I plan to continue to build this excitment with great stories and lessons.

We've taken a few math pre-tests, so I'm learning about your students' math needs. It's important for students to practice their basic facts at home, if they are unsure of them. We will start with our first math standard next week, which requires students to find the correct quotient in a long division problem. Their answers will include remainers as fractions and decimals.

Again, I'm looking forward to another awesome school year. Please email or call me with any questions or concerns. It's a privilege to be your child's teacher.
